North America’s most northern colony of
close to 500 white pelicans fly from their
winter home on the Gulf of Mexico to nest
on islands at Mountain Rapids in the Slave
River.

Fun Fact # 2: Did you know there are 5,000 bison living close to Fort Smith

WOOD BUFFALO National Park was
created in 1922 to protect the area’s en-
dangered wood bison, a herd that now
totals more than 5,000. It was designated a
UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 be-
cause it has one of the largest free-roaming
and self-regulating bison herds in the world,

Fun Fact # 3: Fort Smith has a population of 2500 people.
